Spa Plumbing and Health
There’s an important reason why some spa retailers recommend using a rigid PVC pipe as the connection between the spa and the home plumbing system; a sagging hose or soft PVC pipe may allow water to stagnate and collect bacteria. A rigid, straight pipe drains completely, and does not trap water or bacteria.
In addition to using the right kind of connection to your home plumbing system, spa baths require spa maintenance to prevent bacteria growth. Poorly maintained spas can lead to a condition called Hot Tub Folliculitis. Symptoms include an itchy rash appearing within two days of hot tub use. While this sounds serious, it is completely preventable with regular use of spa chemicals. The water entering your tub through a rigid-pipe spa plumbing connection is clean, and with proper treatment, it will stay that way.
