If time permits at the first meeting, get to know the contractor by starting with small talk. Keep it light and breezy, nothing to personal, just to break the ice. This will make for a smoother meeting and should put both parties at ease. How is he dressed? What is he driving? Sloppy attire and broken down vehicles could show in their work.
Ask a lot of questions, no matter the size of the job. If the contractor is interested, he should appear enthusiastic, and not only answer your questions expertly, but also offer ideas of his own.
